Maldives, the chain of islands lying on the Indian Ocean, has all the attractions needed to make it hot spot for water sports and various beach activities. Be it snorkelling, diving, sea bathing or sailing, the islands can offer it all. Yet the most fun and breathtaking activity Maldives has to offer is surfing, which involves ripping the waves of the Indian Ocean.

Surfing has been practiced around this island nation since about the 1970′s and has only progressed ever since. Having started off with the arrival of a few tourists who introduced this exciting sport, the islands now attract hundreds of tourists each year who come to enjoy the beach and to surf. Due to the pleasant climate and environment during the surfing seasons of Maldives, both beginner and professional surfers are able to surf the waves. The waters surrounding the charming islands are also some of the cleanest, with nothing but clear blue waves.

The surfing season of Maldives spans from February to November. The smallest waves are known form during the months of March, April and May, with the largest swells of waves forming during the months of June, July and August. On average, the typical height of a wave in the waters surrounding the islands varies from 4ft to 8ft, however during the mid-season, waves are known to reach heights well above the average height. The Maldives also conducts several international surfing competitons such as the ASP Pro World Qualifying Series and the Four Seasons Surfing Champions Trophy, which attract seasoned veterans of the sport each year. Some of the best surfing spots in the country are the Chickens, Cokes and Lhohi which are all located on the Eastern Reef of the North Male Atoll.

Located on a tropical island in the North Male Atoll is the Kurumba Maldives, one of the best luxury hotels Maldives. With lush tropical gardens and white sandy beaches, the Kurumba Maldives is a classic Maldivian resort. It offers a variety of rooms for accommodation, ranging from Deluxe to Royal residence, all equipped to give you the best in comfort. The hotel also boasts of luxurious spas and lounges. Leisure activities such as yoga, sports, glass bottom boat rides, dolphin cruises, fishing and even wine tasting are offered at the hotel. Diving, snorkelling, parasailing and windsurfing can also be enjoyed here, making it one of the best diving resorts Maldives.

In the year 1973 the Billabong clothing line was established in Australia and since that time it has been providing the world with the most amazing sportswear and surf wear accessories. In the Australian English lingo, Billabong is a small lake which is an oxbow lake, a part of still water adjacent to a river, cut off by a change in the watercourse. Billabongs are usually formed when the path of a creek or river changes leaving the former branch with a dead end. The love for water and sports is what led to this brand being called Billabong.

The shorts that Billabong is famous for was invented in 1973 by Gordon and Rena Merchant in Australia. They made board shorts at their home and created it by hand for many years. It was then that there was a large demand so they had to move their business to a warehouse to supply them faster just to keep up with the growing demand.

Billabong has all kinds of clothing from jeans to board shorts and wetsuits to shirts. Billabong has now taken over the surfing and snow market in clothing and is now a multinational corporation. Billabong clothing is sold in most parts of the world and has chains all over. Billabong’s line sells denim, walk shorts, board shorts, flannels, fleece, luxury fleece and all ranges of wet suits made during summer or winter seasons based on the surfing culture which has now spread all over the world.

Billabong caters to four interest groups and all their clothing is mostly aimed at these areas. ‘Snow’ which is for the skiers and the snow boarders, ‘Surf’ for all the surfers and surfing culture, ‘Skate’ for the boarders and ‘Wake’ for the water skiers and wake boarders.

Around the brand the company has managed to develop a culture based on surfing which revolves around high adrenaline sports and good physiques. All people involved in this culture crave to be completely involved in it. Billabong has and still produces active lifestyle clothing, accessories and related products designed and distributed to a worldwide customer base of board riders and their products have always been based on authentic environment and sold through specific retailers. Active enthusiasts in every department from marketing and sales, to design and merchandising, bring a genuineness and unique quality to both the innovative products and related events produced by the Billabong brand.

Living on Florida’s Space Coast has many perks, it’s surrounded by water which means you can enjoy any water sport you can think of and some, like kite boarding, the newest extreme water sport. You can drop a line in the water from almost any bridge you come to and can, most likely, catch something to eat for dinner or go to a local restaurant and feast on what their fishermen have pulled in from the night before.

That’s another perk of dominican republic, all the seafood you can eat and if you’re like me and could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this is a very good thing. I’m always amused by people who move here, don’t like seafood and then don’t even try to acquire a taste for it like my brother-in-law, what a waste.

Another benefit of living in Florida is all the islands that are dotted along the coast Amelia Island, Sanibel Island and let’s not forget the Keys. Our islands in Florida are constantly being rated among the “Top 10″ in magazines or on travel shows for best beaches, or best places to find shells or for this or that, we love it.

There are also smaller islands in the rivers here that people pull boats up around during the summer and party long into the night, we have our own “Redneck Yacht Clubs”, so to speak, it really is a great state.

One of the drawbacks to living here, unfortunately, is that we sometimes get storms here, bad ones, and not all have to reach hurricane force to be devastating take Fay for instance, she beat us up pretty bad and she was just a tropical storm when she smashed into Florida. Who will ever forget 2004 when we had 4 storms within weeks of each other, what a mess that was, there were several people who had enough and actually moved out of the state.

One group of people, maybe the only group that look forward to hurricanes are the surfers. The east coast of Florida is know as the small wave capital of the world and when the storms roll in you can bet they take advantage of it.

I happen to have the pleasure of living close to the Cocoa Beach Pier which is home to not only the popular Ron Jon’s Surf Shop but also the Swell Surf camp Cabarete; needless to say we have a lot of surfers here. On September 5 of 2009, Tropical Storm Hanna passed about 100 miles off the coast of Florida and it was a great time to go to the Cocoa Beach Pier, which we did, to watch the surfers.

The sky was all grey and deep blue with hints of purple, there were people all over the pier, drinking, fishing and of course watching and photographing the surfers. We had a good time watching the guys, and girls, get up on some pretty awesome swells, get some pretty wicked rides and catch air. So many people had cameras it was interesting to hear all the comments like “did you get that shot” and “Dude I got him in the air”. We all took our turns at the railing taking pictures and of course the conversation soon turned to all things camera related. The most common question was “What do you shoot with?” I shoot surfing shots in Cabarete with a Canon 5dmark 2

Their was a lot to photograph that day too not only were the surfers spectacular but the sky was awesome the clouds were dark and flowing across the sky but they were swirling too, that was quite a sight.

We all had fun but I think no one had more fun than the surfers did. I’ll bet they were all wiped out at the end of the day but feeling like it was well worth it.

Older handset models were powered by the Android 1.6 Donut, which was upgradable to the 2.1 Eclair. This offered to make you enjoy high-speed surfing anywhere at any time. Now, the Arc comes with the most advanced Android the technology has to offer. It comes with the Gingerbread 2.3.

A point break is an extended wave with a fine form that breaks over reef, rubble, cobblestones, and sand. What’s it like to ride a first-rate point break? Well, lets say you are an advanced surfer, preparing to ride an excellent pointbreak on an excellent day. You wake early and have a quick power breakfast, some yogurt and granola and perhaps a banana or 2.

You wash it all down, put on your boardshorts, and get on down to the pointbreak. You show up to the paddlle-out spot and look out to ocean, and it is fabulous, so there you are, prepared and grinning while seeing perfect lines stacked up, clear to the horizon, and a few happy but frosty-looking acquaintances about to paddle out along with you. So you watch the waves for several minutes, timing the sets, and when it seems like a lull is on its way, you all run as quick as possible to the sea with your board, launch yourself into the shorebreak and land on your surfboard, to get a good running start for your paddle out. Now, that initial jump into the daybreak sea feels sooo excellent, and once you’re settled and paddling out, you look up, and move it on out to the lineup.

You will possibly be struck by a few set waves in the course of your paddle out, but there are ways of dealing with even rather significant waves without ever needing to bail your surfboard. There are indeed times when abandoning your surfboard is your only alternative, but this ought to normally be your option of last resort. Abandoning your surfboard is almost always a bad idea – your leash can break, leaving you without a surfboard, and your surfboard can smack into another person who might just smack you back! So, you master two different strategies for paddling out – one is named “duck diving”, and the other one is known as “turning turtle”. Duck diving is the strategy used by shortboarders, and longboarders generally turn turtle if the waves are head high or bigger. Or else, longboarders can duck dive also, or since they have a big surfboard that can paddle quickly, in little waves they can normally just bulldoze their way out over the foamball.

Now, getting back to this morning’s session, lets look at every thing that has occurred so far:

  1. You’ve already made it out.
  2. The offshore wind is lightly blowing.
  3. The sun is shining a perfectly angled morning light.
  4. For now, these waves belong to you, your family members and your buddies.

Every thing is great. What I’m about to write, I write with extreme sincerity: This indeed is the greatest thing that any individual could ever hope for… I can’t visualize anything more suitable than the following description: You cheer your children on, and at the same time they teach you how to surf, you heckle your friends, and you surf on the best pointbreak waves possible. Luxury cruise ships and luxury lodges don’t even compare. It’s all about discovering fantastic waves; waves that you will never forget. Surfing is very entertaining. However, that’s not all. It is also good for teaching respect, and how to be patient and to relax. You can’t find any superior therapy than this

Now, for my first wave of today…I’ve just dropped into a what seems like is going to be a long, well formed wave. The wave is peaking up early, and it seems as if I can pull into a nice tube, right off the drop. I pull in to the barrell, look at the crystal curtain flying over my head, look out of the tube and grin back at the gal I see smiling in at me, and then come soaring out of the barrell with a great deal of speed to spare. After that, I make a strong, fast drive down the line of the wave, make a good turn off the bottom, and do a cutback – turning with as much power as possible back into the breaking part of the wave, and pulling it off. Then I find out that my legs have turned to jell-o, so I wait, pant, slap my thighs, and then, as soon as the juice is moving again, it’s time for a few exciting inside-section stunts, and needless to say, a good try to finish the wave with a celebratory ridiculous showoff manuever! Then comes the walk back up the point for a drink of water, a swath of sunblock, and yet another wave…

So what’s so wonderful about a point break? Why did Bodhisatva devote himself to them?

1. Usually, they are really nicely shaped, and deliver barrells, wave faces for carving, and fabulous peaks to throw gallons of water around.
2. They are rather spread out, crowd-wise, and usually have several different distinct sections to the wave.
3. Even a so-so surfer canaccomplish great moves, and look like an expert!
4. At pointbreaks, you actually spend pretty much as much time actually surfing waves as you do paddling.
5. You’re able to almost play in some pointbreak tubes – distinct from most beachbreak barrells, which are usually either a profitable competition to the finish, or a mouthful of sand.
6. Well, they are merely the longest waves there are, so as far as genuine fun, they’re the 9′s and 10′s of surfing!
