Prior to the arrival of the Europeans, Pambula was inhabited by an Aboriginal people called the Thaua, whose camps date back thousands of years. Although European explorers ‘discovered’ the region in the late 1700′s, they didn’t settle in Pambula until the 1830′s, when the Imlay brothers established cattle stations on the banks of the Pambula River. In 1844, Captain John Lloyd, retired from the Navy to buy land near the river, where he built The Grange, inviting Syms Convington to move there with his family.

Covington had served as a musician and cabin boy on the second survey expedition of the HMS Beagle, where he met and befriended Charles Darwin. He served as Darwin’s assistant during the voyage, and later became the Postmaster of Pambula, and managed the Forest Oak Inn, which stands to this day. Visitors to modern day Pambula can also see The Retreat, built in the 1850′s by Syms Covington, with whom Darwin corresponded until Covington’s death in 1861. The Toalla Street Court House, which also still stands, was built in 1860, and Pambula was officially declared a town in 1885.

Between the late 1880′s and early 20th century, Pambula saw the boom of a minor gold rush, and opportunists flocked to settle around the mines at the nearby Yowaka River and Pipeclay Creek. Although the brief excitement petered out, Pambula survived, developing prize agricultural crops on the river flats, thriving dairy and timber industries, and oyster farming in the river itself. Today, many of the early colonial buildings remain intact, drawing fascinated history buffs to the area.
